rock slice

Lorraine Tuals contribution to the exhibition "From Microcosm to Cosmos" at Grand Hotel 16-22 October.

When a mountain forms, some rocks are buried and their minerals transform as pressure and temperature increase. This photomicrograph shows a rock slice from Ullared, SW Sweden that contains garnet, clinopyroxene and kyanite. It tells us that a part of SW Sweden was buried down ~60km during a mountain building event 1 billion years ago.

Field of view ~1.5cm.
