Samples must be clean with no pieces that can break off and fall down into the microscope vacuum system or fly around in the sample chamber. It is also important that the samples are free of oil and grease. If the microscope is to be used in high vacuum, the sample must be conductive. If the sample itself is not conductive, it must be subjected to a conductive layer. Both coal and gold coating instruments are available adjacent to the lab.
