Sofia Åkesson

I am working with contaminated sites, main focus on pollutants in groundwater. I am looking at distribution, dispersal and degradation of chlorinated solvents. Present there are c. 2000 sites in Sweden that are urgent to remediate due to the harmful substances and far reaching dispersal.

Together with the group within the MIRACHL project our main objective is to use geophysical measurement methods, resistivity and induced polarization, as a monitoring system for in situ remediation. A missing key for a reliable remediation is the ability to follow the changes in the subsurface with a noninvasive method. Present the most used remediation strategy is to excavate the contaminated soil and deposit it, which is not a sustainable solution.
