The first steps of getting your project started are to contact a supervisor within your area of interest and write a project plan.

With the supervisor you discuss a suitable project and plan. You can do the project outside the university, at a company or in collaboration with another university. If you do your project outside the Department of Geology you also need an internal supervisor at the Department of Geology. You can do a 30 credits project corresponding to 20 weeks of work, 45 credits (30 weeks) or a 60 credits (40 weeks) project. You can find project proposals here: MSc. thesis project suggestions | Department of Geology.

Write a project plan together with your supervisor. The plan should be brief but give a clear description of your specific project (2–3 A4 pages). The language can be Swedish or English. It should contain:

  • Project title
  • Name and e-mail to you and the supervisor
  • Research area, credits, department or another place where you will work
  • Introduction, with a theoretical background to the project and key references (5-10)
  • Aim(s) of the project
  • Material and methods, including, field work, experimental design and analyses
  • A budget (maximum 9000 SEK provided by the department)
  • Time plan including a date for submitting the half time report.
  • Potential ethical aspects on the project. This can for example being: sampling in sensitive areas where permits are needed; research question or potential results that requires ethical considerations such as information about individuals or results that can affect individuals)

The project plan should be submitted through CANVAS.

The degree project should be written like a scientific report in a stringent scientific style and avoid excessive length. But projects are allowed to provide more details and background information than in most scientific articles. You can find more details about formatting and writing on the CANVAS page.

Examination. The examination of your project will be in an open lecture where you present your work. An examination committee consisting of the examiner and external opponent if needed will evaluate your written work and presentation. The course coordinator will plan the examination and appoint the examination committee.
